The Power of Propolis
|
Propolis is a pure organic substance produced by the honey bee to prevent bacterial infection in the hive. Plants such as willow, birch and poplar secrete sap with antibacterial properties. Worker bees collect this sap and mix it with their unique salivary excretions to create Propolis. This is then spread over the inside of the hive, creating one of the most sterile environments known to nature. Propolis is widely recognised as an important natural antibiotic, containing a wide range of elements including amino acids, vitamins, minerals and of most importance, bioflavonoids - now believed to be the active ingredient in the defence and healing processes. Bioflavonoids - or Vitamin P, are a group of compounds found in plant material which contribute to the strength and maintenance of blood vessels. Bioflavonoids are essential for the proper absorption of Vitamin C. The role of bioflavonoids in Propolis is their ability to envelope viruses, rendering them inactive and therefore harmless. Propolis has been used as a natural healing agent for over 5000 years and is extremely effective in its ability to fight bacteria and fungal diseases. It is selective in the bacteria it attacks, only destroying pathogenic bacteria. The body’s own friendly bacteria are not harmed as with synthetic antibiotics. Over the last 20 years much scientific and medical research into Propolis has been undertaken in England, America and Eastern Europe. Research in America, Poland and Russia has shown acne, allergies, herpes and other skin problems to have responded to Propolis. Today, Propolis is of special interest because more and more bacteria are becoming resistant to traditional antibiotics. Propolis is an effective, natural alternative to drugs and suitable for all ages. Research undertaken in China found Propolis to be effective in treating hardening of the arteries, hypertension and coronary heart disease. Propolis is one of natures most potent natural antiseptics. Propolis has also been found to be helpful in protection against colds, coughs, flu and other viruses. Several of our members have informed us that whilst taking Propolis for several years they have not suffered from the latter. It has also been beneficial in other ailments e.g. gaul stones/bladder complaints. Propolis can also be used topically in the form of a balm or ointment to help acne prone skin, eczema and psoriasis. Its natural antiseptic and healing properties makes it a must for medical kits to help heal wounds and minor burns. We are aware that Propolis can be purchased in many of the health shops but a member has given us some information that we have checked out. A farm in York supplies direct to customers by post and the details are below:
