Essential Oils at Home

Introduction
Aromatherapy is a method of using the natural therapeutic properties of the plant life in the form of an essential oil, resin or absolute.

Pure essential oils have been used since ancient times and it is known that the Egyptians were using them for both healing and religious purposes some 4000 years ago.

The essential oils are extracted usually by steam distillation from the odoriferous part of the plant. This end product can then be used in a variety of ways to subtly smooth, uplift, stimulate or generally promote a feeling of well being.

Methods of using Essential Oils

Bathing: Add 6 to 8 drops of essential oils in total to the bath water and agitate the water to thoroughly dispense the oils. Relax in the bath water for 10-15 minutes. Base bubble bath can also be added to the water.

Massage: Add 15-20 drops of essential oils to 50 ml carrier oils. Store your blend in a cool dark place.

Vaporisation: This method can be used to purify the air in the sickroom or eliminate cooking smells. It is also a wonderful way of subtly influencing mood and creating a delightful ambience at home or at work.

Inhalation: Can help to enhance mood or to relieve panic attacks. Add 5-10 drops of essential oils to a handkerchief and deeply inhale when needed or add 10 drops to a bowl of steaming water and inhale deeply. The effects will be heightened with a towel over the head to prevent vapours from escaping. Inhale for 5-10 minutes.
Caution: Do not use this method if you are asthmatic as this may trigger an attack.

General Precautions

Never use essential oils undiluted on the skin with the exception of Lavender and Tea Tree essential oils. If you have sensitive skin carry out a skin test by diluting 1 drop of the test essential oil in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil, apply to the inside of the wrist and leave for 24 hours. If there is no redness or itching the oil is safe to use.

Always ask professional advice before using essential oils during pregnancy.

Store all oils and massage blends in a dark glass bottle in a cool place out of direct light.

Citrus oils are best stored in the refrigerator, never apply citrus oils before sunbathing.

Do not take essential oils internally.

Use essential oils with caution - For babies under 1 year old use only 1 drop in the bath. For children under 3 years of age use only 2 drops in the bath. For children 3 - 12 years use only 4 drops.
