Dr Speight's Cycle Ride
Despite his busy schedule, children's champion, Dr Nigel Speight, is taking time-out next month for a marathon 1,007 mile cycle challenge to raise awareness of ME/CFS and funding for ME North East and AYME. Dr Speight, Consultant Paediatrician at Durham Hospital, has dedicated the last twenty years of his professional life fighting for a greater understanding of ME/CFS in children and young people. He is the nation' most experienced ME/CFS paediatric consultant, having seen 200 cases in the North East and a further 150 cases from all over the UK. Dr Speight is medical advisor to both ME Charities and has always believed that children get ME/CFS when many of his professional colleagues did not. Dr Speight insists that any management should be flexible and patient focused.

Dr Speight is getting on his bike on 10th May and will ride for 17 consecutive days from Land's End in Cornwall, up the west coast of Britain going through the Lake District, then Dumfries, Inverary, Glencoe, Loch Ness, Carbisdale Castle, Tongue and John of Groats, averaging around 60 miles a day. Dr Speight joked that the challenge is a late mid-life crisis based on fear and denial regarding the advancing age! He hopes the challenge will raise awareness of children and young people with ME/CFS and vital funds for the two charities close to his heart, ME North East and AYME.

On Friday 18th May there will be a chance to hear tales of Dr Speight's journey so far at the Theatre by the Lake, Lakeside, Keswick. Please support Dr Speight and make his mammoth cycle challenge a huge success by going to this website to pledge your support www.justgiving.com/nigelspeight.
