NICE Guidelines

The Department of Health and Welsh Assembly Government have asked the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to develop a clinical guideline for the care of people with CFS/ME.
The title will be “Clinical guideline for the investigation and management of chronic fatigue syndrome.”
The remit is; To prepare for the NHS in England and Wales, guidance on the assessment, diagnosis, management and adjustment and coping, symptom management, and the use of rehabilitation strategies geared towards optimising functioning and achieving greater independence for adults and children with CFS/ME.

A draft scope consultation on CFS/ME is presently being circulated for comment. At the same time invitations for nominations of patient/carer representative on the development group have been made. Aware that many people may have expressed an interest, and the number of places will be very limited, we felt that we should make an application, and Jennifer has put her name forward on behalf of ME North East to be considered. Decision will be made early in the New Year.

The NICE guidelines are expected to take at least two years and a final draft is expected by 2007.
