Knowing ME....

Helping You........

Saturday 23rd October 2004

On Saturday 23rd October I was delighted to have taken part in ME North East’s first Knowing Me, Helping You workshop held at the Royal County Hotel in Durham. With an action packed programme including regular rest breaks and the opportunity to meet and chat to new faces the workshop was declared a great success and will become a regular event in the Young People’s Calendar. The morning started with a short introduction by Sheila after parents and carers had been moved to another room for their full day workshop led by Jennifer. Young People were asked to introduce themselves to their neighbour and then a session was held focusing on the current concerns and issues members of the group have surrounding their illness. There was a great response to this session and as a result we were split into smaller groups so more in-depth conversations could be held.

After lunch we had a ‘Caring and Sharing’ session. Based on the responses from the morning the whole group talked about coping with school, college and work, difficulties keeping in contact with friends, support from GP’s and specialists etc. Recommendations on areas of improvement were suggested and Sheila went away with a very long list!!!!

After an afternoon break we then had a Tai Chi demonstration and relaxation exercises which most people joined in with. The individuals who ran the session also spent time explaining the nature of crystals and the benefits they can bring. Some of us were also fortunate to have reflexology treatment or a back massage.

As we were all totally chilled out after the previous session it was then necessary to tackle a more challenging activity – card making!! The craft session put some of us older members to shame as the young members all seemed to be experts with years of experience. I have to say my Christmas card is now positioned on the mantelpiece at home and will remain there throughout October, November and into December as I am really proud of my efforts!!

On behalf of all of us who attended on the day I would like to say a big thank you to Sheila for the organisation and contents of the workshop and to Jennifer for facilitating the parents / carers workshop.
