Kirri’s Arts & krafts

I first met Kirri and her family about 4 years ago……Kirri had been struggling to maintain any education, had missed months of schooling and was desperately trying to keep up with her home tutoring. Kirri had been diagnosed with ME and one of her major symptoms was severe pain in her muscles and joints – not good news when the subject you loved most was
art and design!

As long as I have known Kirri, she has pushed herself to get the very best grades – sometimes, to the detriment of her health. But, it was her art work that kept her going and the sheer determination to be a success and not let the illness beat her. I have seen Kirri put on so many “brave” faces over the years – like many of you do so often to mask how you are really feeling.
After school, Kirri made the bold decision that she would go to the Riverside College in Stockton to study Art & Design. The travel took its toll, but after agreeing a reduced timetable, Kirri made it through the course.

Next, came the Cleveland College of Art & Design. They were very supportive of Kirri’s condition and looked at ways of working that meant Kirri could attend the course as much as she was able. During her time here, she won many awards for her work and her tutors found her a pleasure to work with. I must say, that although Kirri did attend as much as possible – you never saw her in college holidays – she was too busy resting her weary body!!
Now, Kirri moves on and upwards to University – with a choice of Falmouth or Hartlepool – not that long ago when I spoke to Kirri, she was definitely going to Falmouth. Now, it appears she has changed her mind and decided to go to Hartlepool – I wonder if new boyfriend “Jim” swung the decision??? (only joking Kirri!)
I know that Kirri would want me to finish by saying how much she has appreciated the continued support from her family and her boyfriend Jim in helping get her to where she is today. I know that Kirri is going to be a “star” designer in the future and no one could deserve it more!!
