TOP TIPS FOR EXAMS

Plan well in advance for liaising with the school’s Examination Officer, SENCO and Home Tuition Service.

The school’s Examination Officer is responsible for applying, in advance, for whatever ‘special arrangements’ you might need, even if some or all of these are not eventually required.

Special concessions can also be negotiated for completion of coursework elements, flexibility of deadlines etc.

Applications for ‘special arrangements’ (which may require a medical letter of support) need to be submitted by late February for summer 04 exams.

A medical letter in support of the application may be requested from your GP, Community Paediatrician (school doctor) or Consultant Paediatrician.

Plan for a worst case scenario.

Extra time of up to 25% and rest breaks can be sanctioned by the Exam Centre’s Examination Officer without an application being submitted but additional ‘special arrangements’ need to be applied for.

All the following (and other concessions) are possible:
Extra time, rest breaks (even two hour long breaks), sitting exam in separate room at school or Examination Centre, sitting exam
at home with an invigilator at table or on sofa/bed, rescheduling of exam for later or earlier start, rescheduling of exam for following day if unable to sit two exams in one day, use of amanuensis, use of computer and use of tinted overlays on examination paper for those with visual problems.

Don’t be put off too readily if you are told that certain concessions are not permissible – examination boards are very helpful and accommodating of sick young people!
